Nine political parties contested, while UPND, UNIP and FDD participated through the United Democratic Alliance. MMD, PF and the UDA were the largest parliamentary groupings after the vote.
Tripartite elections combined presidential, National Assembly and local-government voting. The presidency was decided by plurality; National Assembly seats were constituency contests.
